Marriage is a beautiful union of not only two people but also two souls. When two people unite in this holy bond, they have a lot of hopes and dreams from the relationship. However, these hopes and dreams can be completely shattered when dark clouds of divorce start looming above the marital relationship.

Many people feel very cheated after a divorce because they end up feeling that their spouse did not deserve their love, devotion and affection. However, divorce does not always have to be a bitter experience. There are times when the marriage is so torturous that a divorce can feel like a much-needed change. Especially in marriages involving emotional or physical abuse, divorce can seem like a newfound freedom.

Can Divorce Be Liberating?

Many people keep tolerating a bad marriage for a long time. They may do so in the hope for a better future or they may just fear the consequences of divorce. Divorce is not as easy a decision as people imagine it to be. Often, a troubled partner may wait for many years to be sure of his or her decision before finally opting for divorce.

There are times when people keep tolerating a bad marriage for the sake of children. It is not easy to imagine the consequences of divorce for children. Therefore, people keep sacrificing their own happiness to ensure that their children get a stable home and future. However, marriage can be complicated. Even when you want to continue in a bad marriage for all the practical reasons, it can still seem torturous.

When people continue to endure the suffering that a bad marriage offers, they are bound to face psychological issues such as depression or anxiety disorders. As a result, a bad marriage can take a toll on their health as well. Some people live in constant fear of divorce; they know they want it but fear the consequences of it.

There are times when women are not financially independent. In such cases, women do not know how they will support themselves or their children after a divorce. For that reason, they keep procrastinating divorce till the marriage reaches a stage where it almost becomes unbearable to stay in a marriage. When such women divorce, they not only feel that they faced their fears but also they finally feel liberated because they get rid of all the negativity associated with the bad marriage.

Facing your fear of divorce can not only seem empowering but also peaceful because you stop living in fear thereafter. Some people keep bearing with an abusive marriage because they just do not know how to break free from it.

Constant physical or emotional abuse can cause immense mental and physical harm to the victim in the marriage. Recent studies have proved that most victims do not opt for a divorce in such cases because they become so used to the constant abuse that it distorts their vision of reality. Therefore, instead of fighting off the abuse, the victims start accepting the abuse. When these victims gain divorce, they actually gain a new life. It is very natural for these victims to feel as if they have just been released from a prison after years and years of constant torture.

In What Ways Can Your Life Turn for the Better Through Divorce?

It is important for you to think about your divorce from a right perspective. Most people feel sorry for themselves and fail to accept divorce as the eventuality of their marriage. Doing so not only delays their healing process but also leaves behind psychological scars that may not heal for a very long time.

Divorce should mark a new chapter of your life. Not only is divorce a new beginning for you but it is also a new beginning for your thought-process. Post-divorce period is an excellent period for introspection; find out what you want to change in yourself and what you want out of your life. Often, we set incorrect expectations of ourselves and others around us and then end up thinking that life has been unfair to us. Instead of playing the blame-game, take this time to explore yourself as a person.

This is also a great time to explore what you enjoy doing and then engaging in those activities. With your bitter marriage out of the way, this is the time for you to rebuild your mental and physical health. Practising mediation and yoga at this time will not only help you find inner peace but will also help you feel good about yourself as you will start thinking positively.
