The article describes the various rituals involved in a typical Christian wedding ceremony. It also briefly mentions about the different wedding ceremonies in other religions and cultures.

A wedding is a momentous event in each one's life and an occasion when two people vow to spend their lifetime together. It is a union of not just the couple but of the two families. Every couple wants to make their wedding ceremony a memorable moment and take lots of efforts to make elaborate arrangements.

Wedding Rituals

A wedding ceremony is an auspicious event wherein the bride and the groom participate in traditional rituals to honour their relationship. The wedding ceremonies may differ according to religion, culture, countries and ethnicities, but the essence remains the same. Couples must take wedding vows with the blessings of the priest or religious chief and family and friends.

A traditional Christian ceremony takes place in a Church wherein a group of close friends and family congregate to bless the couple. The ceremony begins with a bridal procession wherein first the groom and the Minister enter the hall followed by the Bridesmaids. The Bridesmaids may be escorted by groomsmen followed by the Maid of Honour. The Maid of Honour is also escorted by the Best Man. The last to enter are the Flower Girl and the Ring Bearer.

Then arrives the most awaited moment when the Bride enters with her father. All the guests must stand up as a mark of respect to her. After the traditional wedding songs, hymns and pledges, the Minister pronounces the couple as husband and wife. Couples also exchange wedding rings during the ceremony.

This wedding ceremony is followed by a wedding reception which comprises of the wedding cake and champagne.

Apart from the Christian ceremonies, the Hindu and Muslim ceremonies too comprise of elaborate rituals.

Among the Hindus, the couple must take seven wedding vows around a fire that is considered sacred. Also, the knot is solemnized after the couple exchanges garlands and seek blessings from the elder members of the family.

In the Islamic tradition, the ceremony takes place according to the teachings of the holy Quran. The bride and the groom are asked whether they accept each other as husband and wife and with the consent of both the parties, the wedding is complete.

A traditional wedding ceremony makes the marital bond sacred. It is a joyous affair and the culmination of eternal love and happiness for the couple.
