Reasons Behind The Boom

Online dating has its own language. In fact, the Internet itself has it's own distinct language. People who frequent chat rooms for instance will know that one needs to understand certain "codes" or abbreviations to be able to relate to others online.

It's okay to use English. This however, may just show how old and out of touch you are. To help you become "cool", here are some useful abbreviations used when online dating.

  • ASL: this stands for "age/sex/location"
  • ATM: no, not automated teller machine but rather, "at the moment"
  • AWYR: "awaiting your reply".
  • B4N: "bye for now". Useful when well, saying "goodbye"
  • BAK: its doesn't mean back. "Back at Keyboard" is what this stands for. Ok, close enough.
  • BBL: "Be Back Later"
  • BF: what else but "boyfriend"
  • BRB: This means "Be right back"
  • BTU: no, this doesn't refer to the energy unit but rather "back to you"
  • BTW: of course, nothing but "by the way".
  • CU: "see you". Nice ring to it, huh?
  • CUL: "catch you later"
  • DBF: "divorced black female"
  • DBM: just like the previous item. This time around, it is "divorced black male"
  • DWF: "divorced white female"
  • DWM: and of course, "divorced white male"
  • F2F: "face-to-face"
  • GIGO: "garbage in, garbage out"
  • GL: another way of wishing someone luck. "Good luck".
  • GMAB: "give me a break"
  • GOI: commanding someone to "get it over" with.
  • GTG: the good old "got to go"
  • HAK: oddly enough, this seemingly "unromantic code" stands for "hugs and kisses".
  • HIG: another way of asking how a person is doing: "how's it going
  • HIH: "hope it helps"
  • ICBW: no, not intercontinental ballistic weapon. This stands for "I could be wrong".
  • IGTP: "I get the point"
  • IM: what else but "instant message"
  • ISO: not the standardisation agency but rather "in search of"
  • JK: not the artist, but "just kidding".
  • JAS: "just a second"
  • KISS: what else but "keep it simple, stupid"
  • KIT: "keep in touch"
  • LDR: "long distance relationship"
  • L8R: another way of saying "later". Get it?
  • LOL: "laughing out loud"
  • NRN: "no reply necessary
  • OAO "over and out"
  • PDA: no, not the handheld device. This stands for "public display of affection".
  • SBF: "single black female"
  • SBM: and of course, "single black male"
  • SWF: the famous "single white female"
  • SWM: and "single white male"
  • SYT: "see you tonight"
  • TAFN: "that's all for now"
  • TBD: "to be discussed"
  • TTYL: "talk to you later"
  • TTYS: "talk to you soon"
  • TY: "thank you"
  • TYVM: but of course, "thank you very much"
  • WRU: "who are you?"
  • YW: "you're welcome".

So there you have it. Learn the language and stay cool while online dating.
