The goal of online dating is being able to connect with your desired date. More often than not, singletons take such a goal for granted.

Who can blame them? Talking about goals and connections make online dating seem like some scientific experiment. Most if not all people who engage in online dating simply want to find a mate.

In essence however, you need to take a moment to think about such details. Just like any endeavour, online dating entails knowing what you want and how to achieve it. Simply logging on to an online dating service without a clue as to what you want or what you're doing is a recipe for failure. You will simply be going around in circles. You may even get into trouble should you run into online dating hooligans - married people or hustlers for instance. All they want to do is take advantage of hapless victims such as yourself.

So how do you achieve your goal of connecting with your online dating partner?

- First thing to do is read their profile carefully. You will get all the information you need about them here. This allows you to create an effective contact message. An email or instant message that asks specific questions about something you read in their profile shows that you're indeed interested in knowing them.

- Your contact message must be witty and easy to read. Write it as though you're talking to her. Be conversational. As for asking questions, doing so allows you to get a response. It's simply keeping the conversation flowing. By the same token, it is an excellent way to get to know them better.

- Don't be too straightforward. Try and allow her to warm up to you first. As much as you may want to get a face-to-face date, you need to restrain yourself from doing so. Develop that confidence and trust level by talking about things that matter to her. If she opens up to you for instance, listen to what she is saying. Avoid including yourself into the message, at least for now.

- After a few email exchanges, it may be an excellent idea to start thinking about telephone conversations. Ask her if you can call her. Just don't be too pushy and allow her to call the shots. If she gives you a mobile phone number, accept it. It shows that you have clean intentions as you respect her wishes. You're well aware that security is her top priority.
These are just a few online dating tips to get you started. Learn to connect with your newfound date. In the end, you'll realise that that connection will be what you need for a lasting real-world relationship.
