Just like everything else, there are two sides to online dating. People who have experienced this whole new world have their own joys and heartaches to speak of. Contrary to naysayers’ beliefs, online dating has brought many singletons together. Here are some of the more joyful insights:

• Many singletons have been introduced to a vast number of potential dates:Today’s singles live in a world where one has to swim lest one sink. A career-driven environment where the fast and efficient bloke wins the rat race. This has left many of them working long hours and having less time for dating. Online dating has changed all this. It has provided them a place where they can meet new and interesting people even while they unwind in their living room.

• People aren’t limited to their neighbours or the girl/boy next door: It used to be that our Mums would arrange for us to go out with the girl next door. Although there isn’t anything wrong with her, the whole setup just didn’t appeal to us who where looking for something “new”. Online dating can actually be considered a godsend. It not only lets us find a date. One can choose from anyone of the registered users. And they come from all over the world. Talk about having the world right at your fingertips!

• Couples have found love online: This is probably the best way to describe “finding love in the most unlikely places”. A lot of singletons who were hesitant to try out online dating have actually found the love of their life via dating websites. They were wise enough to sift through profiles, send out witty email messages, respond accordingly and so on. The follow-up telephone conversations and face-to-face meetings were likewise successful. Some of them have even gotten married or are engaged.

As mentioned earlier, there are some horror stories to watch out for when online dating. These may include:

• Running into undesirable elements: This is probably the most common “pain” online dating has to deal with. The fact of the matter is, they can’t be stopped. It is after all, a “free country” where anyone can sign up. The best defense would be to use extra caution when screening your potential dates. Use those instincts. And learn to play sleuth once in a while.

• Getting the run around:Despite practising some good old sleuthing, some people are victimised by married men, hustlers, and so on. Very unfortunate indeed. This isn’t a reason to stop online dating altogether. The only thing to do is be more careful next time around. And try to read between the lines more.

So there you have it. The two sides of online dating. Just a brief insight for those who are thinking about trying it out for themselves. If you do decide that it could work for you, then give it a go. Happy surfing!
